Purdue University North Central bachelor's degree Nursing students in the Community Health Nursing Practicum will present a free health fair for the students of Marquette High School in Michigan City on Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The fair, "Above the Influence" offers nursing students a clinical experience and an opportunity to learn about community outreach and meeting the health education needs of the adolescent population, under the clinical direction of Peggy Rose, PNC assistant professor of Nursing.
The fair will include interactive activities and displays that will provide information on drug and alcohol use to help students make smart choices.
The fair will feature:
A crashed car to be parked in front of the school provided by the Indiana State Police.
A discussion panel will include a Valparaiso-area lawyer; a member of the LaPorte County Emergency Medical Services; a Michigan City firefighter and a coroner.
There will interactive technology for students to use to simulate the effects of driving while drunk, buzzed, and texting.
"Beer goggles" will be provided by the Indiana State Police and Area Health Education Center (AHEC ) to provide an experience similar to that of driving while impaired.
Positive Influences to Teen Health (Path) will offer information.
Valparaiso University and Notre Dame ROTC units will provide information on alcohol on campus and its consequences.
Root Funeral Home will present a coffin for a planned activity.
The Grim Reaper will be on hand to "take" four students in a represent ion of the statistical likelihood of teens to be killed due to drunk driving in a student population of that size.
The keynote speaker will be Brian Brophy, of WIMS radio in Michigan City, who will present, "Living Sober."
