PNC Representative Named Outstanding ICC Community Service Director

PNC-Laura-WeaverLaura Weaver, coordinator of the Purdue University North Central Center for Service Learning and Leadership, was presented with the 2012 Indiana Campus Compact Outstanding Community Service Director Award as part of the Campus Compact Service Engagement Summit Award Ceremony.

This is the sixth year for the ICC Community Service Director Award. It is given annually to recognize staff at Indiana Campus Compact member campuses who exemplify the building of campus and community connections and support of student learning and development through community engagement.

Weaver was nominated for the honor by PNC Chancellor Dr. James B. Dworkin. "Laura is invaluable to Purdue North Central's service learning and engagement programs," said Dworkin in his letter of nomination.

"When Laura arrived at PNC, the Center for Service Learning and Leadership was in the development stages based on a proposal that other faculty and staff had written. She took the vision and made it a thriving reality. She is dedicated to service learning and civic engagement and works diligently to foster the development and strengthening of partnerships with the community we serve."

She played an instrumental role in the PNC selection by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for its 2010 Community Engagement Classification, has helped PNC earn the distinction of being named to the President's Community Service Honor Roll for five consecutive years and she played an integral role in PNC taking part in The President's Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge. Her campus and community initiatives were the basis of PNC's invitation to join the Talloires Network, an international association of institutions of higher education committed to civic engagement and community service.

Weaver reflected on the PNC commitment and enthusiasm for service learning,"The transformative power of these service-learning relationships, from a small connection between myself and a newly engaged faculty member to the time-tested partnership between a faculty member and a community partner, is evident in the lives of the students we touch, and the campus and community where we work and live."

Weaver was recently selected as an Indiana Campus Compact Senior Fellow. In addition, she has attended numerous national and state-wide conferences in the field of service learning. She presented at the 4th International Symposium on Service Learning in Ningbo, China. She serves on the six-member Indiana Campus Compact Advisory Council; she leads the PNC initiatives with the President's Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge and supervises the PNC Service Engagement and Interfaith Service Corps AmeriCorps programs.

She has an article due to be published in the forthcoming book, "Service-Learning in Higher Education: Connecting the Global to the Local" expected out in January 2013.
