Purdue University North Central Andrew Gillies recently received a Student Community Service Mini-Grant from Indiana Campus Compact to help fund the Poetry SlamCamp 2014 that will meet during the week of June 16 at the Michigan City Public Library.
Now in its third year, SlamCamp is a five- day event involving activities, games and education promoting expression through poetry, visual arts, technology and performance art. Slam poetry writing and performances will provide a range of children which includes exiting sixth graders through eighth grade students with an opportunity to enhance their talent, engage others through expression and showcase their skills in front of an audience.
The camp is a cooperative effort of the PNC College of Liberal Arts and the Michigan City Public Library and is made possible by the efforts of PNC faculty members, students from the PNC English Club, Purdue University Calumet faculty members, qualified community members and student volunteers from both universities. The professors and volunteers will work with the SlamCamp students to teach them about slam-style poetry and communication, as well as visual and performance arts. The faculty and student volunteers will share their own works to provide examples and get the children excited about expressing themselves confidently and clearly.
At the end of the week, volunteers provide a showcase event in which the campers can perform their work in front of family and friends. The Showcase will be held Friday evening. Some highlights can be seen on the SlamCamp Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/SlamCampNWI.
SlamCamp Hours are June 16 through 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and June 20 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be a public performance night on June 20 at 6 p.m.
Registration is $5, which includes all activities, lunch and a camp t-shirt. PNC students and faculty members are volunteering their time to create and lead the program.
