PNC Students Present “Back Home Again In Indiana”

Purdue University North Central students will present "Back Home Again In Indiana," a celebration of Indiana writers, poets, composers and lyricists, on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. and Sunday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. in the Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02. The program is free and open to the public. It will last about one hour. PNC

This program is presented by students in the Communication 491 class, Oral Interpretation II. The Oral Interpretation class focuses upon the performance of all genres of literature before an audience. The current program, and others performed in the past, features a theme and examples of literature that support it.

The script compiled and edited by Dr. Daniel Padberg, associate professor of communication. "Back Home Again In Indiana," celebrates writers, poets, composers, and lyricists, who were born or lived in Indiana for some period of their lives. Musical selections will feature composers such as Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael and others. The works of writers James Whitcomb Riley, Booth Tarkington, Kurt Vonnegut, Sarah Bolton, George Ade and many others will be included. The script will present biographical material and excerpts of the works of these Hoosiers.

The students will highlight the works of Hoosiers whose creativity has left a legacy of which all folks associated with Indiana, past and present, can be proud.

Based on the traditions of Reader's Theatre, this program features "readers" with a book or script present. The selections are performed in a presentational style in an environment that does not pretend to be anything other than a performance space. Performers assume a variety of personas depending on the demands of each selection. The Reader's Theatre has been a fixture on the PNC campus since 1989 when the event emerged as a result of a classroom activity for students.
