Popcorn Fest!

It has been a number of years since I have been able to make it to the Popcorn Fest, but I am getting excited for this year. As a young child, it had special meaning for me, since my family and I lived right down the street from the old popcorn factory. With so many activities to choose from, it's hard to choose favorites. I think I managed to remember some of my best memories though.

So what did little Dave enjoy most about the Popcorn Fest? Well here is a few.

  • Watching the parade with a bird eye view from my dad's shoulders.               This is common practice at parades, but getting that height and being able to see it all makes the difference. Probably killer for the parents, but if you can, step up and give you kids the best view on the street.
  • Arts and Crafts- Specifically string puppets. If you have gone to the Popcorn Fest, or any similar event, you likely know the type I'm talking bout. Furry, goofy looking, built kinda like an ostrich? These puppets provided hours of entertainment in my youth.
  • Running a ring toss booth as a Boy Scout. That's right. Way back in the day, even I was a Boy Scout. We had the typical ring toss to win 2 liters of pop. And brother? Business was booming. If you belong to some form of organization or company that is hosting a booth at the Festival, I highly suggest volunteering your time for at least a little bit to get to meet the people of Valparaiso, and just enjoy some great fun.

Well there it is. My top 3. If you get a chance to experience all 3, you are likely to be a young boy or girl, or have a very strong friend who can hoist you on their shoulders. Have a great time at the Popcorn Festival Valparaiso!
