Porter County Animal Shelter Announces Friday the 13th Weekend Lucky Black Cat Adoption Promotion!

portercountyanimalshelterblackcatpromoBring yourself some luck on Friday the 13th weekend and adopt a black or black & white cat for only $25 at the Porter County Animal Shelter! The reduced fee program runs from Friday, February 13th through Sunday, February 15th ONLY.

In the US, the public prejudice toward black cats originated during the unfounded hysteria of the Salem witch hunts when people strangely believed that witches transformed themselves into black cats.

“That is about as silly as saying that stepping on a crack will break your mother’s back,” said Shelter Director Jon Thomas. “If that were true, I doubt you could find a mother anywhere without a broken back.”

In many cultures, the black cat is revered and a symbol of good luck. The Scottish believe that a strange black cat’s arrival to the home signifies prosperity. In the English Midlands, a black cat as a wedding present is thought to bring good luck to the bride. Many people believe that a black cat brings good fortune and also, that anyone who finds the one perfect, pure white hair in an all-black cat and plucks it out without being scratched, will find great wealth and good luck in love. In Britain, on the Yorkshire coast, wives of fishermen believe that their menfolk will return safely if a black cat is kept in the house. A black cat in the audience on opening night portends a successful play.

“The shelter currently has over 20 perfectly lovable black and black & white cats which are overlooked because of silly superstitions,” said Thomas. “They need and deserve loving forever homes.”

Each adopting family is provided with a spay/neuter certificate, if applicable, that is honored by most local veterinarians. All potential adopters must complete an adoption application and are subject to approval by Shelter staff. Most of the adoptable black and black & white cats or kittens can be seen on the Shelter's Facebook page at http://tinyurl.com/PCAScats
