Welcome Rob Barnes!

Rob Barnes is our new Auto Technology teacher in Portage. Rob’s program is located at Willowcreek Middle School. Rob has nearly 20 years of experience in Auto repair service, most recently with Dave’s Automotive Repair in Valparaiso. Rob’s interests include car restoration and motorcycles. Rob’s goals for his students include improving their math and verbal skills used to write and communicate service work to customers. He intends to promote student professionalism just like that required out in the workforce. Welcome Rob! Mr. Barnes’ afternoon class is pictured below.

Target Store Donation

We are appreciative of receiving our Annual Target Donation, this year for over $62. This donation comes from those who use a Target REDcard for their purchases and have chosen to direct the Target 1% of the purchases to the Career and Tech Center. Let’s all sign up for REDCard!

Careeer Center Building Trades Afternoon Class

In Partnership with the Porter County Habitat for Humanity Chapter

Students pictured above are attending the Building Trades class at the Career and Tech Center. Instructor, Mr. Doane, is pictured at the far right. This program will be doing something new this year partnering with the local Habitat for Humanity community organization. We have been building a “spec” home every two years for the last ten years. This year we will complete a Habitat home over the course of the school year. Our project house is located only a few blocks from the Career Center at the corner of Morgan and Oak Streets. Students will get to take the project all the way from a foundation to a completed home and be able to participate in handing the keys over to a worthy and grateful recipient.

Career Center Completes First Blood Drive of the Year

The Red Cross report on our recent blood drive showed that we collected 58 pints toward our goal of 60. 33 were new donors and 75 attempted to donate. Good job to students and staff! Our Health students did a great job of administering the event.

College GO! Week Sept. 20‐24

College Go! Week is special because many colleges will waive application fees this week. Although many of our local universities do not charge application fees (such as Purdue North Central, Purdue Calumet, and Ivy Tech), it is still a good time to start planning for life after high school.

Seniors who are planning to apply for a college or university should take an ACT and/or SAT Assessment. They should take it early so they have time to retake the test if they did not do very well compared to national averages. Juniors can generally wait until winter or spring after studying as much Algebra 2 as possible.

The first SAT is Oct. 9, and the online deadline is this Friday, Sept. 10. The next ACT is Oct. 23, and the online deadline is Sept. 17. A student who gets free/reduced lunch can get a waiver for the fee from his/her home school counselor.
