John Sego, Named Porter County Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year

John Sego, VHS senior, attending our EMT program last year and this year he is enrolled in our Criminal Investigations class. John plans to join the military after graduation. In high school, John has proven his desire to help others through volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club. ValpoLife.com recently profiled Sego’s story in a video. The video segment can be seen at www.valpolife.com/videos?videoId=61128664 or at www.bgcpoco.org. The video tells a story about a truly outstanding young man.

“Throughout John’s life, he has come face to face with obstacles which may cause others to languish. Rather than allowing these difficulties to define his life, John has persevered to become the respected young man he is today,” said Tommy John, Program Director.

Sego has been a Club member for eight years. Throughout his time with the Club, he has developed a strong desire for helping others. “Here at the Club, there is not a time you will not see me doing something. I love helping out staff members as much as I can,” says Sego. At the Club, he learned the basics of working a real job, as well as adult responsibilities in the Teen Enterprise program. As a member of the Club’s youth service group, Keystone Club, Sego helped Keystone raise enough money to have an end of the year trip to Indiana Beach. Sego is a senior at Valparaiso High School and will enlist in the United States Marine Corps upon graduation. He plans to study Combat Engineering in the marines. RIP Brian Kingsbury

The Career Center regrets the loss of Brian Kingsbury in a tragic accident while unloading a project truck. Brian was a star in our Modern Machining program and was presently enrolled in his Sophomore year at Vincennes University. Brian loved building things and specially working on trucks and 4x4’s. He was a special young man, who will be missed by many friends and always remembered.

CTE Student Presenters at NWI Workforce Summit

Pictured above are seven Technical Education students from across the region who presented to the NWI Workforce Summit 2013 Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce. The three students on the left are from our Career and Tech programs: Paige Collins (Ivy Tech student, graduate of Health Occupations), Bobby Ross (Wash Twp senior, attended Building Trades and Modern Machining programs), and Kenneth Cohen (Hobart HS junior enrolled in Video Productions). These students answered questions about why they enrolled in vocational classes and told about their positive experiences, goals, and aspirations. At the conclusion of the presentation, the students received a standing ovation from the audience.

Auto Students Continue PCCTC Adopt-a-Block Community Service Project

Students enjoyed April Fool’s Day by picking up litter in Tower Park. This community service project is a part of the Valparaiso Adopt-a-Block program. Students enjoyed giving back to the community and leaving the park spotless for the many area children who play there.
