Depot Project Moves Forward

The Grand Trunk Depot Project would enhance student construction skills focusing on historic preservation. If the Depot Project is successful, it is envisioned that our Building Trades students will do the restoration work to return the exterior of the Depot to as close as possible to its historical original condition. Our Electronic students will install internet and audiovisual capabilities, giving those students a real life application for their skills. We will remodel the interior into a 21st Century modern day learning facility. Hopefully, we will also incorporate alternative technology, such as passive solar heating and pervious paving into the project if possible. Ideas for help raising the money for this project are welcome.

Weather Related Cancellation and/or Delay Information

The Porter County Career and Tech Center and SELF School follow the cancellation/delay decisions of the Valparaiso Community Schools. All other CTE sites follow the closing decisions of the hosting school. All commuting students should drive carefully and use common sense and their parent’s input when deciding if it is safe to drive to their CTE location.

In the event of severe or inclement weather, school may be delayed or canceled. Please use the following sources to track any weather related delays or cancellations:

  • VCS Alert (The registration procedure is available on the Valparaiso Community Schools homepage http://www.valpo.k12.in.us ). Go to “School Closing Information” on the left side of the screen. You can register your cell phone to receive a message through this process.

Alternative Energy Dividends

When the sun came up on January 7, the Porter County Career and Tech Center began generating electricity with our rooftop solar array that we are now selling back to Nipsco. The project was a joint effort of our Modern Machining and Electronics programs. Funding came from Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission funds and private donors. Thanks also to our District Advisory Council which supported this project.

Although, we buy electricity for around .10 kWh, we have a 15 year agreement in place with Nipsco purchasing this power back, at the prices shown below:

Urschel Plans to Donate an Industrial Robot to our Modern Machining Program

Our students will learn how to program this robot to perform industrial operations such as lifting, sorting, and inspecting parts. Many thanks to Urschel Laboratories for thinking of us.
