Students Nominated for Indiana Award for Excellence

Paige Smith (VHS) - Health Careers/Health Occupations Paige has already earned three semesters of scholarship at Ivy Tech through her participation in the Health Occupations Student Association. Paige is also active in her church and numerous volunteer activities. She is CPR/AED certified for infants, children, adults, and pets; First Aid/First Responder certified, and Heart Saver certified. She has a goal to be the best she can be in the medical field.

Maddie Royter (Kouts) - Video Productions I and II. Maddie wants to be a producer or a teacher. She is known as one of the on-air personalities in our student-produced “On the Road” production, but she also played a significant behind-the-scenes role as well. Maddie also volunteers at church, blood drives, and as an artist for the Youth Service Bureau Chalk-the-walk fundraiser.

Geoff Westerlund (Portage) - Health Science Education/EMT Geoffrey is a Portage High School senior and currently enrolled in the Porter County Career and Technical Education’s Emergency Medical Services program at Hobart High School. He has received distinction as being in the top 30 students of his graduating class. Geoff is involved in Natural Helpers, National Honor Society, Varsity Soccer, and HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). He plans to attend Valparaiso University for Nursing upon graduation.

Student Mentor Program (Mrs. Ellis/Mrs. Sorensen) was also nominated for a Guidance Award. The fourth entity nominated for an Award for Excellence is our Student Mentor program. Our student mentor program is directed by student support coordinators, Kelli Ellis and Kate Sorensen. The mentor program provides additional leadership training to selected students from all CTE programs. These students are prepared to lead tours both for prospective students and visiting dignitaries. They also accompany our coordinators to presentations at middle schools and sending schools. Our mentors are proud of their designation and also become a critical component of our anti-bullying policy.

Below, can be seen the class meeting in a brainstorming strategy session. No electronics, just ideas and communication toward a common goal for the purpose of leadership development and problem solving skill enhancement.

After one broadcast our students were treated to a tour of the WSBT-TV live-truck and its equipment by photojournalist Jade Birch. Jade complimented our students on their production work and gave them advice about their futures.
