Porter County Career Center Open House Educates the Community

Monday night, students and parents had the opportunity to explore the different options that the Porter County Career and Technical Center offers. Through an open house style event, students from all over Porter County were given a firsthand look at the many different programs available to them in their Junior and Senior years.

The doors opened at 6:30 pm and were kept open until 7:30 pm. Students were able to move from class to class to check out what they might be interested in. Many students and parents came out to see classes ranging from Heath Occupations to Auto Shop, along with a myriad of others.

"We encourage the kids to come out to our Open Houses," said Jon Groth, principal of the Porter County Career and Technical Center. "I always tell them that it's the only chance they'll have to interview a teacher before taking a class."

Many kids came out to do exactly that. Many of the classrooms were filled with kids eagerly listening to the faculty explain what the curriculum for next year would entail. Along with the presentations, the students and parents had the chance to speak to any of the teachers whose class they might be interested in.

Not only that, but the student run store, 18 on Franklin, was open to the incoming students and parents. Between the scent of chocolate chip cookies and the welcoming attitude of the faculty, it was easy to see why so many people stayed the whole time.

Aside from the warm atmosphere of the Career Center, the night proved very informative for the students and parents alike. The Porter County Career and Technical Center was able to reach out to any student who might be interested in pursuing an education there.

"The big advantage to coming to an Open House like this is you get to know your teachers," added Jon Groth. "The students get the chance to connect with the faculty here."
