Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction Seeks Halloween Costume Donations

recycling-waste-reduction-district-of-porter-countyPorter County Recycling & Waste Reduction is gearing up for a costume swap in October by collecting used Halloween costume donations.

The solid waste district has two collection boxes in the Porter County Government Administration Center, 155 Indiana Ave., Valparaiso; one by the Health Department, level 1, and the other by its office, suite 314. A third box is located at the Portage Township Trustee’s Office, 3484 Airport Rd. Portage.

“We are seeking other high traffic locations and hope to have a number of drop boxes around Porter County,” Donna Stuckert, public education coordinator, said. “We will list them on our website, www.PorterCountyRecycling.org.

In order to do the swap this fall, the district has to build a supply of costumes from which community members can choose, she said.

“We’re seeking donations now, but anyone who would like to get a costume at the swap in exchange for one they turn in now should visit our office to get a ticket to use at the October swap,” Stuckert said.

Costumes should be clean and in good condition. The event is an effort to encourage reuse.

“Parents spend so much money on costumes that their kids wear once for a couple of hours,” Stuckert said. “A costume swap means fewer resources are used to make new products, provide transportation and create packaging,” she said.

The swap event will be held Oct. 8 in the large meeting room of the Valparaiso Public Library, 103 Jefferson St.
