Porter County Special Olympics Fundraiser

Porter County Special Olympics boasts over 600 athletes throughout the county, ranging in age from 8-60+. The program is ongoing, as there is at least one sport in session every month of the year. All monies for this outstanding sports program are raised through fund-raisers and donations locally, and are used for such things as uniforms, transportation, and event fees. It is an entirely volunteer organization, with no paid positions, but those involved receive far more rewards from the joy of athletes' accomplishments.

This year extra blessings come with an extra burden. Both a male (P.C. Hoosiers) and female (P.C. Shock) basketball team have been chosen to represent Indiana at this summer's National Special Olympic Games to be held at the University of Nebraska. There are also two track stars, and two bocce players who will be enjoying this experience. As exciting and delightful it is to be so honored by the state, the need to raise an extra $25,000 is Porter County's responsibility to cover the costs for the 24 athletes. Because of the exceptional support through the past 40 years for these very special athletes, coordinator Lorrie Woycik sincerely believes it can be done.

A major fund-raiser will take place at Valparaiso High School auditorium on Sunday, March 21st when "The Three Amigos" (impersonators Quentin Flagg, Ed "Monkey Man" Pazugnat, Steve "Rod Stewart" Bobitt) perform the music/songs of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, and others in a benefit concert for the National teams. The benefit concert is guaranteed to have you cheering and squealing, and leaving with music in your step, or Lorrie will refund your money. Concessions, door prizes and a 50-50 raffle will add to the afternoon enjoyment. Tickets, compliments of Boy-Conn Printers, are available from all coaches, athletes, and parents, or by calling 465-1323. Prices are $15 ($20 at the door) for adults, $12 ($15 at the door) for students and seniors. Doors open at 2p.m. with the concert beginning at 3p.m. Do yourself and your family and friends a favor and join the fun while helping support a great group of honored atheltes. You'll be glad you did--that's a promise.
