Porter County Teens Battle Drugs at the 2nd Annual Battle of the Bands

POY-300x163The United Way of Porter County's Power of Youth Council will be hosting its 2nd annual county-wide high school Battle of the Bands at Valparaiso University's ARC on Sunday, April 10, 2011 from 5-8 p.m. to raise funds and awareness of the increasing teen drug and alcohol abuse problem.

The Power of Youth Council’s goal is to raise funds which will be given to youth-serving programs in Porter County that focus on prevention and early treatment of teen substance abuse. Last year, The Power of Youth Council chose four recipient nonprofits for successfully implementing programs that help prevent teen substance abuse. These agencies included; Summer Day Camps hosted by Valparaiso Parks and Recreation, the Visiting Nurses Association’s youth bereavement program, the mentoring of adolescent girls in the field of science with Discoveries Unlimited, and the Youth Rocks anti-drug program at the Portage YMCA.

Porter County Indiana ranks higher than the state average in teen alcohol and drug abuse— an ongoing and growing issue according to the Epidemiological Report created by Porter-Starke Services with the help of the United Way of Porter County and Valparaiso University.

One band from each school will be chosen to compete in the Battle of the Bands. The winning band will receive an 8-hour recording session from Willowtree Recording Studios.

The Battle of the Bands is being sponsored by the United Way of Porter County and Willowtree Recording Studio. If you are interested in sponsoring this event, or your band would like to participate, please contact Liz Tesar at liz@unitedwaypc.org.
