Porter Regional Hospital Donates Over $2,000 to the VNA Hospice of Porter County

VNA-Porter-Check 3Porter Regional Hospital made a generous donation to the Visiting Nurses Association Hospice of Porter County in late August. They donated funds that were generated from the 4th Annual Porter Regional Hospital Healthy Hustle 5K Run/Walk that took place in June 2015.

The VNA Hospice has worked with Porter for about the last 45 years. Both organizations work to keep our communities healthy and when they combine their knowledge and outreach, the impact is greater. The VNA Hospice of Porter County is a nonprofit organization which provides health and social services to individuals who are terminally ill.

VNA-Porter-Check 1“This money will be put to work for our hospice programs,” Rick Rhew, President and CEO of the VNA of Porter County said. “If any specific needs need to be met we will be able to meet them thanks to the help of Porter… We have worked with Porter over the years providing care throughout the community and that is one of our goals, to maintain what we can do for each other. It’s great having another heath care partner with a similar mission that’s supports you.”

The amount raised was $2,190.34 and was presented to Rhew by Porter CEO Steve Lunn.

“We are thrilled to be able to present these proceeds to the VNA Hospice,” Lunn said. “The Healthy Hustle was a wonderful race and we had great volunteers and participants. We hope to continue the great partnership we have with the VNA and do more great things with them in the community.”

VNA-Porter-Check 4The Healthy Hustle used to be called the Sleigh Bell Run and that race was run every winter for about 15 years. The race coordinator is Patty Neely, Supervisor of the Cardiac Rehab Department at Porter Regional Hospital.

“We changed the name and date of the the 5k to give folks a tour of the new hospital grounds after it was built a few years ago on Highway 6 as well as to promote wellness,” Neely said. “We let the associates choose each year which nonprofit benefits from the race and this year they chose the VNA Hospice of Porter County.”

“We are a major healthcare facility in Porter County and it is important to serve our communities in every way possible,” Terrie Fontenot, Chief Nursing Officer for Porter said. “The Healthy Hustle sparks the health of our community and that is important because health shouldn’t be considered only when you’re ill, but also when you are well. We like to concentrate on overall health.”
