Purdue Calumet Falls 2-0 at St. Francis Wednesday

PUC-Falls-2-0-at-St-Francis-WednesdayThe Purdue University Calumet women’s soccer team showed a flash of toughness in the second half of Wednesday’s conference contest at University of St. Francis (Ill.), as the Peregrines shut out the Fighting Saints in the second frame in a 2-0 road loss.

The Peregrines (1-9-1, 0-5 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) stepped up to the challenge in the second half after falling behind 2-0 at the break, as USF’s Casey Harris and Trish Masterson gave the hosts scores in the 8th and 22 minutes, respectively.

After being outshot 14-5 in the first 45 minutes, Purdue Calumet shortened the difference in the second period, recording seven shots to the Saints’– winners of seven games thus far with a 7-2-2 overall record (3-1-2 CCAC) – 11. USF would outshoot the Peregrines for the match, 25-12.

Purdue Calumet’s defense held strong, though, allowing just three corner kicks all game and freshman keeper Kelley Sharp (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) finished the game with five saves in all 90 minutes in goal.

Classmate Shelby Ross (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) led the Peregrines in shots with four, and senior Kami Graber (Nashville, Ind./Brown County) had three – two on goal. Freshman Shayna Coy (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Leurs) added three shots in the effort.

USF’s Jessica Kiely had three saves in goal for the win for the Saints, who haven’t lost since Sept. 23.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Saturday, Oct. 10, when the Peregrines host Judson at noon at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field.
