Purdue Calumet Home Opener Set for Saturday at Noon at Dowling Park

PUC-PeregrinsThe Purdue University Calumet baseball team is set for Opening Day at Dowling Park when the Peregrines play host to league foe Holy Cross College in a doubleheader Saturday, March 21, at Albert’s Diamond Field.

The Peregrines (8-1, 1-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) will take on the Saints (13-7, 4-0) in two seven-inning games beginning at noon (CT) at Dowling Park. The entrance to the baseball field is located on 175th street, just west of California Avenue and east of J.F. Mahoney Drive, near the Hammond Fraternal Order of the Police (7527 Kennedy Ave).

Fans are asked to park along 175th street, and handicap parking is available in the lot next to the field. Admission to all Purdue Calumet baseball games is free.

LAST TIME OUT
After a thrilling 8-0 start to the 2015 season, the Peregrines sustained their first loss in the second game of a doubleheader with CCAC foe St. Xavier March 17, falling 8-4. The Peregrines won Game 1 of the two-game series, coming from two runs behind to win, 5-2. In Game 1, Micah Rooke (Robertsdale, Ind./Clark) and Cody Dykema (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) finished with two hits and an RBI each to the lead the Peregrines’ offense, while junior right-hander Phil Madvek (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) pitched a complete-game gem on the mound, scattering nine hits, striking out seven and giving up just one earned run in seven innings.

SCOUTING THE SAINTS
Holy Cross is currently riding a three-game winning streak after convincing victories over Robert Morris (13-6, 15-9) and St. Francis (Ill.) (5-3). Jacob Lanning leads HCC at the plate with a .485 batting average with 32 hits, seven doubles, a home run and 21 RBI while teammate Chris Woodruff is batting .412 with 21 hits and nine RBI. Lanning is also the Saints’ leader on the mound, as he holds a 4-0 record with a 0.32 ERA and 31 punchouts.

PEREGRINE LEADERS
Dykema lead the Peregrines at the plate with a .536 batting average to go along with 15 hits, three doubles, a triple and nine RBI. Freshman teammate Nazario Trejo (San Jose, Calif./Piedmont Hills) adds a .444 average with eight hits, two doubles, a triple and nine RBI. Madvek leads the way on the hill, as he’s 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA and 15 Ks in 18 innings pitched.

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday’s contests will mark the first meetings between the two teams.
