PUC-No-15-Purdue-Calumet-Falls-at-Judson-83-81#15 Purdue Calumet Falls at Judson, 83-81
The No. 15 Purdue University Calumet women’s basketball team couldn’t find its shooting touch in an 83-81 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss at Judson University Saturday.

The Peregrines (10-3, 5-2) shot just 36 percent (27-of-75) from the field and made just one 3-pointer in a 1-for-17 effort from downtown in their first loss to the Eagles (7-7, 2-5) since the 2010-11 season.

Senior Jada Buggs (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) led Purdue Calumet with 23 points, six rebounds and three steals and junior Cassidy Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) added 21 points and 11 rebounds, including an 11-for-11 performance from the free-throw line.

Sophomore Katie Wampler (Scottsburg, Ind./Scottsburg) added 12 points and junior Dariyan Morris (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) had 11 points to round out Peregrine players in double-figures.

Judson led at the half, 37-35, behind a 23-point second quarter. The Eagles continued to put on the pressure in the second half, leading by nine, 62-53, heading into the fourth quarter. That lead ballooned to as many as 12, 72-60, with 4:16 remaining before the Peregrines put together a comeback effort in the final minutes.

Deno’s ability to get to the charity stripe fueled the run, as the junior hit six-straight shots from the line to cut the Eagles’ lead to five, 78-73, with 1:46 left. She didn’t stop there, hitting two–straight jumpers to pull the Peregrines within two, 79-77, with 51 ticks to go.

The Eagles answered with two free throws of their own from Jayla Barrett before a Buggs jumper led to a technical foul on Judson, who tried to call a timeout with none on the board. Deno drained both ensuing free throws with nine seconds on the clock to tied it at 82-all, but Judson’s Ludwig found an open layup with seconds to go for the game-winner.

Purdue Calumet kept itself in the game with a 81.3 percent (26-of-32) performance from the free-throw line, while Judson made 18-of-26 (69.2 percent). The Eagles shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the floor and hit 11 3s, shooting 34.4 percent from deep.

Barrett led all scorers with 30 points on 9-of-17 shooting and Kayla Toussaint added 18 points for the Eagles.

The Peregrines return to action Tues., Dec. 29, when they travel to Springfield, Ohio, for the Wittenburg Classic. Purdue Calumet is slated to face Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) Dec. 29, then host Wittenburg on Dec. 30 in the two-day tournament.
