The No. 14 Purdue University Calumet women’s basketball team jumped out to an early lead and then held off a furious rally from host Trinity International University in a 68-61 league win Saturday.

Peregrines’ junior Darien Thompson (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, classmate Dariyan Morris (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) added 13 points and another junior, Cassidy Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) had 10 points.

On the boards, Purdue Calumet sophomore Jessica Kiser (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds to lead the way on both teams.

Purdue Calumet (8-2, 4-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) began the game with an offensive outburst, as the Peregrines led 20-4 after a Patrice McBee (Culver, Ind./Culver Community) free throw. The Peregrines caught fire from outside in the first quarter, as Morris hit two triples and Deno and Thompson added one each. Morris had eight of her 13 in the first period as Purdue Calumet led, 20-7, entering the second frame.

TIU (3-6, 1-4) would battle back, as the Trojans outscored the Peregrines 18-11 to cut the lead to just five, 31-25, heading into halftime. The final two frames proved close, but Purdue Calumet was able to hold on down the stretch, as a Deno jumper pushed the lead to nine, 64-55, with 2:12 remaining.

The Trojans would get no closer than five, 66-61, on a Rayelle Ross 3 with 35 seconds left, but Thompson drained both tries from the charity stripe to seal the victory, the Peregrines’ second-straight.

Purdue Calumet shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the field for the game, holding the Trojans to just 36.4 percent (24-of-66). The Peregrines also outshot TIU from 3-point land, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) to 35.7 percent (10-of-28), and held a 47-37 advantage on the boards.

McBee added nine points and a career-high five blocks in the victory.

Ross and Nika Bracun each had 15 points and Sarina Pitson-Falvo had 10 point to lead TIU in the loss.

Purdue Calumet has won eight straight against Trinity International, dating back to the 2011-12 season.

The Peregrines return to action Tuesday, Dec. 8, when they travel to Governors State for a nonleague contest beginning at 5 p.m. CT in University Park, lll.

Men's Hoops Uses Five Double-Figure Scorers to Defeat TIU, 82-72
A strong first half performance by the Purdue Calumet men’s basketball team propelled the Peregrines to an 82-72 win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletics Conference opponent Trinity International Saturday afternoon.

The Peregrines (5-6, 1-5 CCAC) picked up their first CCAC win of the season over the Trojans (8-4, 2-2) thanks to a solid defensive effort, which held TIU to 31.3 percent from the field.

The Black and Gold were led by LaBradford Sebree (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) who led the five Peregrine scorers in double-figures with 16 points, while Daulton Albanese (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) recorded four trifectas en route to 14 points.

Freshman Chandler Spring (Covington, Ind./Covington) scored 13 points, Darric Obinger (Munster, Ind./Calumet Christian) recorded 12 points and Ryan Rader (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Purdue Calumet would leap out to a 12-4 lead to jump-start the opening half, thanks to three-point field goals by Albanese and Spring.

Another trifecta by Albanese followed by a layup from Rader would increase the Peregrines lead to 23-10, with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.

The Black and Gold would keep up their aggressive pace for the rest of the period, taking a 40-20 lead heading in to the break.

Purdue Calumet dominated the boards in the first half, outrebounding the Trojans 38-15, thanks to 11 rebounds by junior big man Danny Paschen, seven by Rader and six from Sebree.

The Peregrines took their first half momentum in to the second period, adding to their lead after a three-point field goal by Spring gave the Peregrines a 51-22 lead.

The Trojans would lessen their deficit thanks to a pair of three-point field goals by Sam Schroeder made it 61-45 with under seven minutes remaining.

TIU would continue to pressure the Peregrines, getting within single digits after a layup by Jeremy Carlyle put the Trojans within nine points, 75-66 with 1:10 remaining.

Trinity International would continue to battle with the Black and Gold, but the Peregrines stopped their comeback efforts and hung on to defeat the Trojans 82-72.

Purdue Calumet will return to action Tuesday, Dec. 8, when they travel to Matteson, Ill. to take on Governors State University in a non-conference match-up at 7:00 p.m. (CT).
