The No. 15 Purdue University Calumet women’s basketball team found its stride in the second half in a 76-59 nonleague victory at Governors State University Tuesday night.

The Peregrines (9-2) had three players in double figures, led by senior Jada Buggs’ (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) season-high 15 points and career-high nine assists. Junior Cassidy Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) and sophomore Katie Wampler (Scottsburg, Ind./Scottsburg) each had 14 points, with Deno draining 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

Purdue Calumet led 36-29 at the break, aided by nine first-half points by Buggs, who had five of her nine dimes in the first 20 minutes. The Peregrines showed their strength out of halftime, however, as Purdue Calumet exploded for a 12-0 run and held the Jaguars (0-11) scoreless for the first 4:07 of the third period. Deno had the first three buckets of the frame, finishing a fastbreak layup and then drilling two triples to make it 44-29.

The Peregrines led by as many as 27, 58-31, after a Michaela Kikendall (Morristown, Ind./Morristown) layup with 3:30 to play in the third, before taking a 63-39 lead into the final frame.

Purdue Calumet’s bench gave the visitors a boost, as Peregrine reserves outscored GSU, 33-9. Wampler led the way, followed by eight points from Kikendall and seven more from sophomore post Ellie Michalski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago).

Junior Dariyan Morris (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) added four assists and Buggs and Patrice McBee (Culver, Ind./Culver) each had five boards to round out Peregrine leaders.

Purdue Calumet shot 46.0 percent (29-of-63) from the field compared to 39.3 percent (24-of-61) for Governors State, though the Jaguars won the battle on the boards, 43-32.

GeLina Webb led GSU with 22 points and Achuynna Robinson had 16 points in the setback.

The Peregrines return to action Thursday, when they host Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Robert Morris, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 poll. Game time is set for 5 p.m. CT at the Fitness and Recreation Center.

Men's Hoops Falls to Governors State Tuesday Night
The Purdue University Calumet men’s basketball team fell to non-conference opponent Governors State University, 85-65, Tuesday night at the Recreation and Fitness Center.

The Peregrines (5-7) were led by junior guard LaBradford Sebree (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) who notched a team-high 20 points while senior big man Ryan Rader (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) recorded his second straight double-double garnering 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Jaguars (2-11) jumped out to a 12-6 lead thanks to a pair of trifectas by Dalvin Echols, who connected on six shots from downtown en route to a 24 point performance.

Governors State would increase its lead to 33-17 with just over seven minutes remaining in the half, but the Peregrines would go on a 15-2 run to cut their deficit to just three points, 35-22, with 1:32 left in the period.

Purdue Calumet’s run would give the Black and Gold momentum heading in to the break down just five points 37-32.

After an even first ten minutes of the second period between both squads, the Jaguars would break their lead open and take a 70-56 lead with seven minutes left.

Governors State would hold on to that lead for the remainder of the half and come away with the 85-65 victory.

Along with Echol’s game-high 24 points, Governors State was led by Deon Thomas, who scored 18 points and gathered 19 rebounds.

The Peregrines return to action on Thursday, Dec. 10, when they host Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Robert Morris at 7 p.m.(CT).

Purdue Calumet Signs Lake Central's John Mamelson to 2016-17 Tennis Squad
Purdue University Calumet head tennis coach Tim Maluga added to his 2016-17 recruiting class with the recent signing of Lake Central standout John Mamelson.

"John is a great athlete who is relatively new to the game of tennis," Purdue Calumet Head Coach Tim Maluga said of Mamelson. "He has a ton of potential and will be a valuable asset to our team immediatley."

Mamelson, a letterwinner for the Indians at No. 1 doubles, won the Macy Invitational doubles championship in his senior season.

The son of Greg and Bridget Mamelson, John plans to major in management with a concentration in marketing when he begins coursework at Purdye Calumet in fall 2016.
