#11 Purdue Calumet Upsets #5 Indiana Wesleyan 80-60 in Friday's Tip-Off Classic
The No. 11 Purdue University Calumet women’s basketball team never trailed in a statement-making victory over visiting #5 Indiana Wesleyan University Friday, defeating the Wildcats 80-60 on the first day of the Domino’s Tip-Off Classic at the Fitness and Recreation Center.

Junior Cassidy Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) led the Peregrines (2-0) with a game-high 26 points – scoring her 1,000th point in the process – to lead the way, which included a blistering 6-of-10 performance from 3-point land. Senior center Patrice McBee (Culver, Ind./Culver Community) had 14 points and seven rebounds, and the junior duo of Dariyan Morris (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and Darien Thompson (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) added 13 points each.

Sophomore forward Katie Wampler (Scottsburg, Ind./Scottsburg) rounded out the Peregrine leaders with a double-double, chipping in 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with 11 boards.

“The secret to that win was high intensity and paying with passion, not forcing things on offense, attacking on defense,” ninth-year Head Coach Tom Megyesi said of the win – which made history as a victory over highest-ranked opponent in program history.

“I’m very pleased with their effort for 40 minutes – they played from the beginning to the end, they never got frustrated or flustered, they did a great job of crashing the boards and not allowing them any second shots so I was very pleased with that.”

The Peregrines opened its meeting against the two-time national champion and 13-straight NAIA National Tournament qualifier in a 12-5 run, as Morris scored two-straight layups and drained a triple. Deno added a 3-pointer five seconds later after an IWU missed jumper to give this host an early seven-point advantage.

Purdue Calumet led 23-15 at the end of the first quarter, and then extended that lead to 11 with 6:38 in the second after Wampler hit from deep with a shot on the wing. IWU wouldn’t go away while capitalizing at the 3-point line – the Wildcats shot 12-of-30 for the game – as two triples by Tori Kraft and one from Anna Imhoff cut the Peregrines’ lead to five at halftime, 39-34.

The Peregrines made their move in the third period, as a steal by Morris led to two free throws, followed by two free throws by McBee. In all, Purdue Calumet owned the charity stripe, making a near-perfect 95 percent (19-of-20) to keep the Wildcats at bay. Deno would add another one of her six makes from deep with 2:29 left in the third quarter, followed by two free throws by Wampler pushed the lead to 15.

Deno wasn’t finished, as she notched her 1,000th and 1,001st point with a 3-pointer from the wing with 40 seconds left in the third frame. The Peregrines closed out the game in the fourth, making 6-of-7 shots from the stripe and holding the 3-point firing Wildcats to just 16 points and 4-of-10 shooting from behind the arc.

Morris dished out eight assists and had four steals in an all-around effort and Thompson added seven assists for the Peregrines.

Tori Kraft (16 points) and Carlee Cottrell were the lone Wildcats in double figures, as Cottrell added 13 on 3-of-16 shooting.

For the game, Purdue Calumet shot 50 percent (26-of-52) compared to 38.5 percent (20-of-52) for IWU.

The Peregrines return to action Saturday, when they host Cornerstone in a 2 p.m. CT matchup on the final day of the Tip-Off Classic. The Golden Eagles (1-1), who are receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 Poll, lost to #18 Robert Morris in Friday’s first contest, 64-51.

Junior Marquette Muhammad (Chicago, Ill./Crete Monee) added 10 points and six rebounds to round out the Peregrines’ offensive leaders.

The Peregrines never trailed in the game, as the host jumped out to a 13-4 lead to open first half. Sebree ad Spring hit back-to-back 3s, Muhammad added two layups and Sebree dropped another triple to fuel the run.

Governors State (1-3), however, stormed back in the final minutes of half. The Peregrines led by as many as 16 (38-22, 7:31) before the Jaguars executed a 25-9 run in the final seven minutes to tie the game at 47-all with 28 seconds left on a Dalvin Nichols 3.

Taking a 49-47 lead heading into the locker room, Purdue Calumet opened the second half with a Spring make from deep to extend the lead to five, 52-47. The teams went back and forth over the next five minutes before the Peregrines were able push the lead to nine, 66-57, with 15:07 left. That lead was only 11 with 6:54 to play, but a Sebree triple and back-to-back buckets by Muhammad and senior Ryan Rader (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) broke the game open into an 18-point margin late.

Purdue Calumet Upset in Double OT in CCAC Quarterfinal, 2-1
A cross into the box turned unlucky for the No. 2-seeded Purdue University Calumet men’s soccer team in a tough 2-1 loss in double overtime to seventh-seeded St. Ambrose (Iowa) in Saturday’s opening round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Peregrines (12-4-2) were eliminated from the conference tourney with the loss, but still have a shot at making the NAIA National Tournament if top-seeded Roosevelt, the regular-season CCAC champion, can capture the tournament title. The Lakers were a 4-1 winner over Calumet St. Joseph Saturday to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.

St. Ambrose (9-8-1) proved again to be a tough team to crack, as the Fighting Bees jumped on the board first with a goal in the 25th minute by James Trevor. The Peregrines answered eight minutes later (33’) when JP Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) delivered a ball from the left side into the center of the box for senior Alex Dougherty (St. John, Ind./Lake Central), who finished to tie it 1-all heading into halftime.

The two teams took that deadlock through 110 minutes, playing one extra frame before St. Ambrose’s Michael Ohioze produced the game-winner in the 104th, finishing a cross into the box from Daniel Brown.

The two teams tied during the regular season, 1-all.

Purdue Calumet’s offense outshot the Bees, 16-14, 8-6 on goal, but SAU had more corner kicks, 8-2. Garza led the Peregrines in shots with seven – six on goal.
