Purdue Calumet Blanks Moody Bible for Second Straight Sweep
The Purdue University Calumet volleyball team recorded their second sweep in two days Wednesday night, defeating Moody Bible 3-0 at the Fitness and Rec Center.

The Peregrines (9-18) swept the Archers (13-7) in three sets (25-11, 25-20, 25-22).

“Our team played really well tonight and did an excellent job blocking,” head coach Julie Wiejak said.

“I feel like a lot of our players have been working on specific things to enhance their game and they did a very nice job executing those things they have been working on tonight. “

The Black and Gold jumped out on an early 6-0 run to start off the opening set, before increasing their lead to 12-4 on a pair of service aces by Akeelah Muhammad (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Township).

Freshman Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South) and Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) helped the Peregrines go on another six point run to increase the Black and Gold’s lead 20-6.

Purdue Calumet would continue their offensive dominance, earning a .524 attack percentage with 12 kills and just one error to take Set 1 25-11.

The Archers started the second set up 12-9, but the resilient effort from the Peregrines helped them even the score 13-13 on a Muhammad kill.

The teams would trade possessions for the next several points before the Black and Gold took control and won Set 2, 25-20 after a Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County) kill ended the set.

Much like the second set, Set 3 was filled with back and forth possessions, until kills by Carissa Jones (Hammond, Ind./ Bishop Noll) and Carley Bartolini (Chesterton, Ind./Portage) helped solidify the 25-22 victory.

The Peregrines constant dominance at the net continued tonight, earning nine total team blocks, after a 13 block performance last night, assisting on a pair of wins this week.

Martin led all attackers with 12 kills and a .474 attack percentage, while Muhammad added seven kills and 6 block assists and Bartolini registered 30 assists in the victory.

Pasko added 11 digs, Kenyatta Scales (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) had nine digs and Jones (five), Elsea (three) and Martin (three) each recorded multiple block assists.

The Peregrines return to action this weekend, as they travel to Trinity International for a CCAC Crossover tournament.

Purdue Calumet faces off with Judson Friday, Oct. 23 at 5:00 p.m CT before playing Trinity International Saturday at noon and Roosevelt at 2:30 p.m.
