The Purdue University Calumet volleyball team dropped a three set match to Judson University in the first day of Trinity International’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Crossover tournament Friday night.

The Peregrines (9-20, 3-11 CCAC) fell to the Eagles (18-11, 9-5) in three sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) at the Van Dixhorn Arena in Deerfield, Ill.

Judson would take an 11-7 lead to start the first set, but the Peregrines would fight back to even the score at 14-14 on a kill by Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford Country).

The Eagles would regain the lead on back-to-back kills by Jeennifer Donnell and Claire Speweik and keep that lead for the remainder of Set 1, picking up the 25-21 win.

Purdue Calumet would trade points with the Eagles for the first part of the second set, before taking a 9-7 advantage thanks to a service ace by Setter Carley Bartolini (Chesterton, Ind./Portage) and a kill from Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South).

Judson would go on a 10-3 run to take a 17-12 lead before winning the second set 25-18.

After the Peregrines and Eagles traded the lead for the early half of the third set, Judson went on to win Set 3, 25-22 to pick up the three set victory.

The Peregrines were led by Pasko, who recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs while sophomore Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) notched eight kills and 10 digs in the setback.

Bartolini registered 26 assists and Kenyatta Scales (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) recorded

Purdue Calumet will return to action tomorrow, Oct. 24, as they play in the final day of the crossover against the Trinity International Trojans (2-14, 1-10 CCAC) at 12 p.m. CT, the Roosevelt Lakers (9-13, 5-7 CCAC) at 2:30 p.m. CT.

Baker Leads Purdue Calumet at NAIA Great Lakes Invite
Amanda Baker led the way for the Purdue University Calumet women’s cross country team against a competitive field at Saturday’s NAIA Great Lakes Challenge at Gracewil Golf Course in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Baker (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central), a freshman, ran a time of 21 minutes, 21 seconds on the muddy course to place 89th overall in the field of 296 to pace the Peregrines, who placed 23rd overall with 636 points. No. 2-ranked Aquinas captured the team title in a meet that featured five teams in the NAIA’s Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and another receiving votes.

Fellow freshman Sara Kubas (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) was the next Peregrine finisher, placing 118th overall with a time of 22:23. Georgina Diaz (Hammond, Ind./Hammond) was next at 23:02 (136th) and Christine Lewandowski (Whiting, Ind./Bishop Noll) came in 139th at 23:10.

Megan Gliva (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) wasn’t too far behind in 154th (24:04), and trailing her was Abigail Bondi (Whiting, Ind./Whiting), who ran a 24:22 (157). Alejandra Garcia (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) rounded out the Peregrines finishers with a time of 26:28 to place 171st.

Purdue Calumet caps the 2015 regular season in two weeks, as the Peregrines compete in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, set for Nov. 7 in Bourbonnais, Ill.

Cordovas Lead Purdue Calumet Men's Cross Country at NAIA Great Lakes Invite
Alex Cordova led the way for the Purdue University Calumet men’s cross country team on a muddy course and in a tough field at Saturday’s NAIA Great Lakes Invitational at Gracewil Golf Course in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Cordova (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) ran a time of 27 minutes, 45 seconds in the 8-kilometer race to place 64th overall in the field of 288. Purdue Calumet placed 18th out of the 29 teams, which included six teams from the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll.

Teammate and cousin Salvador Cordova (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) was the next finisher, running a time of 28:15 to place 77th overall. Sophomore Roger Jachna (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) crossed the line at 29:44 (120th) and Matt Mathias (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) and Jordan Posthauer (Lafayette, Ind./Fountain Central) ran stride for stride, finishing 133rd (30:29) and 134th (30:30), respectively.

Senior Fernando Pina (Hammond, Ind./Hammond) finished 146th with a time of 31:05 and Arturo Ruiz was 150th (31:21) to round out the Peregrines’ Top 7.

No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan won the team title, followed by No. 6 Olivet Nazarene in second and host and 15th-ranked Aquinas in third.

Leggett Scores Hat Trick in Purdue Calumet 4-0 Win over Holy Cross
Behind Brianna Leggett’s first career hat trick, the Purdue University Calumet women’s soccer team snapped a 11-match losing streak and captured its first conference victory in the process with Saturday’s 4-0 shutout of visiting Holy Cross College.

Leggett (Allegan, Mich./Allegan), a freshman, scored goals in the 7th, 11th, and 42nd minutes to give the Peregrines (2-13-1, 1-9 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) a 3-0 lead at the break.

She found the first on a pass ahead from Kami Graber (Nashville, Ind./Brown County) that turned into a breakaway down the right side before finishing the second on cross assist from classmate Shelby Ross (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North). The third was on an unassisted play, as she found the ball near the box and finished down the right side for her final score.

The Peregrines’ Tiffani Kotas (Alsip, Ill./Alan B. Shepard) then recorded her first career goal shortly after halftime, as she took a rebound off the post on Michelle Wartman’s (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) shot and beat the keeper to extend the lead to 4-0.

Freshman keeper Kelley Sharp (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) picked up her first career victory and shutout with a stellar performance in goal with five saves.

Purdue Calumet outshot the Saints (2-13-1, 1-9) by a convincing 25-7 margin, including 11-5 on goal, and had more corner kicks, 7-2. Ross led the Peregrines in shots with six and Leggett finished with five, putting all three on goal in the net.

Holy Cross keeper Hayley Deisinger had eight saves in the losing effort.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Oct. 27 when the Peregrines travel to Trinity Christian for a CCAC road matchup. Purdue Calumet will play its final home game and celebrate senior Kami Graber when the Peregrines return home on Saturday, Oct. 31, with a regular-season finale against Calumet St. Joseph.

Purdue Calumet Falls 1-0 to Holy Cross
The Purdue University Calumet men’s soccer team fell to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Holy Cross College, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Dowling Park’s Pepsi Field.

The Saints (9-6-1, 5-4-1 CCAC) scored in the 11th minute, after a pass from Kyle Hendzel found Troy Padgett in front of the box who netted the only goal of the match.

Purdue Calumet (10-3-2, 6-3-1 CCAC) would battle for the entire match, but the backline for the Saints held strong and kept the Peregrines scoreless for the first time all season and the first time since the Peregrines fell to Olivet Nazarene in the 2014 CCAC Semifinals.

Purdue Calumet outshot the Saints by a 15-7 margin, including 6-1 on goal, and had more corner kicks, 5-3.

Peregrines junior Nicolau Monteiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/IBMEC) led both teams with six shots in the match, three of them being on goal.

Senior’s JP Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan), Andres Ayala (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) and Carlos Ramirez (El Paso, Texas/Coronado) each chipped in with two shots for the Peregrines in the setback.

Brian Aldrich led the Saints in goal with six saves while Ahmed-Shaibu, Lukman and Troy Padgett each recorded three shots for Holy Cross.

The Peregrines return to action Wednesday, Oct. 28, as they travel to Palos Heights to face Trinity Christian for a CCAC matchup at 3:00 p.m. CT.

Purdue Calumet will return home for its final regular-season match of the season on Saturday, Oct. 31, when the Peregrines honor their nine seniors with a 2:30 p.m. kickoff against Calumet St. Joseph at Pepsi Field.

Purdue Calumet Splits on Final Day of CCAC Crossover
The Purdue University Calumet volleyball team used a strong overall team performance to defeat Trinity International 3-1, followed by a 3-2 loss in a 5-set battle with Roosevelt University to end the second day of the CCAC Crossover.

The Peregrines (10-20, 4-11 CCAC) tied their win total from last season with the win over the Trojans (3-17, 2-13 CCAC) (25-15, 22-25, 28-26, 25-13) before falling to the Lakers (11-15, 7-9 CCAC) (19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 12-15).

“This was the best total team effort I have ever seen in my coaching career,” head coach Julie Wiejak said. “I am so proud of this group of young women who represented Purdue Calumet volleyball today with heart, fight, love and togetherness.”

“So many players had the best day of volleyball I have ever seen them have. Today, huge strides were made in the effort to put Purdue Calumet volleyball on the map.

Match 1: Peregrines 3, Trinity International 1

Purdue Calumet started off the opening match against the Trojans with a 5-4 lead, thanks to a pair of kills fromKayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County).

The Trojans would even the score at 8-8, before the Peregrines rattled off a five straight points to give them a 13-8 advantage. Purdue Calumet would stay in control for the remainder of the set to take a 25-15 win. After Trinity International won Set 2, 25-22, the Black and Gold would find themselves down early, 13-8 to start the third set.

Purdue Calumet would fight continuously for the remainder of the game, to even the score 21-21 on a kill by Carissa Jones (Hammond, Ind./ Bishop Noll).

The Trojans would take the next two points, but the Black and Gold would counter with two points of their own, thanks to kills by Akeelah Muhammad (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Township) and Kayla Elsea. Both teams would trade the next few points, until the Peregrines took a 26-25 lead on a kill by Jones.

TIU would take the next point to even the set for the fifth time in the game, before sophomore Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) recorded two straight kills to give the Peregrines a 28-26 win.

Purdue Calumet carried that momentum in to the fourth set, starting out with a 4-0 lead before gaining control for the remainder of the match to win the fourth set 25-13.

The Peregrines were led by five players who recorded double-digit kills in the match, including four players with double-double performances.

Gabrielle Martin led the way for the Black and Gold with 15 kills and tied her career high with 19 digs while Akeelah Muhammad recorded 12 kills, two solo blocks and four block assists. Kayla Elsea hit a .556 attack percentage with 10 kills and 0 errors on 18 attempts for her third game in a row without an attack error.

Freshman Jenna Pasko (Lansing, Ill./T.F. South) notched 10 kills and a .429 hitting percentage with 19 digs, while teammate Carissa Jones picked up 10 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore setter Carley Bartolini (Chesterton, Ind./Portage) recorded a career best 50 assists and 12 digs in the Peregrines victory.

Match 2: Roosevelt 3, Peregrines 2

After the Lakers took the first set, 25-19, Purdue Calumet would continue to battle in the second set to take a 14-10 lead midway through Set 2.

The Lakers would get within two points making it 15-13, but the Peregrines pulled away at the end of the set to win 25-22, evening the match at one set apiece. Roosevelt took an 11-9 advantage early on in the third set, however Purdue Calumet would go on a 7-0 run thanks to a pair of kills from Jones to take a 16-11 lead.

The Lakers fought back within one, towards the end of the set, after a kill by Chelsey Crippen made it 20-19, but the Peregrines scored five of the next eight points to win the third set 25-22. Roosevelt would go on to with the fourth set, 25-20, followed by a fifth set win, 15-12, thanks to the play of Brooke Lee who propelled the Lakers to a five-set win over the Peregrines.

Martin led the Peregrines with 13 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double in a row, while Jones also recorded her second straight double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Muhammad notched 10 kills and three block assists to help the Peregrines record at least 9 total team blocks for the fourth time in five matches.

Bartolini also registered her second most assists in her career following her 50-assist performance in the previous match, recording 43 assists against the Lakers to round out the Peregrine leaders.

Purdue Calumet will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 27, as they travel to Joliet, Ill. to take on CCAC foe St. Francis (Ill.) at 7:00 p.m. CT.
