Purdue Calumet Tops Robert Morris to End Day One of Crossover

PUC-PeregrinsCarissa Jones powered her way to career-high 17 kills and the Purdue University Calumet volleyball team pulled off a thrilling four-set win over Robert Morris University to cap Day 1 of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Crossover Tournmanet at the Fitness and Recreation Center Friday.

The Peregrines (6-12, 2-5 CCAC) return to action in the final slot of Saturday’s Crossover, taking on Cardinal Stritch at approximately 4 p.m. at the FNRC.

Jones (Whiting, Ind./Bishop Noll) swung for a .262 attack percentage and added six digs in the Peregrines’ 25-27, 25-15, 25-21, 26-24 victory over Robert Morris.

Purdue Calumet dropped its first set of the day, a 25-18, 25-19, 25-11 decision to a strong Roosevelt (11-8, 4-2 CCAC) team.

Against Robert Morris, the Peregrines trailed in the final set, 24-22, before benefiting off two attack errors by the Eagles (2-17, 0-6). An ace by Gabrielle Martin (Kankakee Valley, Ind./Kankakee Valley) gave the Peregrines a 25-24 lead and Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County) sealed the victory with a match-ending kill.

Martin added 11 kills, 18 digs and three service aces and Elsea finished with five kills and a solo block. Junior Haley Smith (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bourbonnais) delivered 38 assists and added three service aces of her own and Akeelah Muhammad (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Township/Kishwaukee) had eight kills.

In the loss to Roosevelt, Jones led again with six kills, Erica Dinnocenzo (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) had four kills, and Smith added 15 assists.
