Purdue Calumet Tops Roosevelt, 7-3 in Wednesday League Victory

PUC-PeregrinsThe Purdue University Calumet softball team used a strong offensive performance and the Peregrines' defense held Roosevelt University to just three earned runs in a 7-3 league road win Wednesday at the Ballpark in Rosemont.

Purdue Calumet (12-11, 5-5 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) connected for 12 hits in the contest, led by three from junior Jess Loy (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) and two each from Ashley Adams (Lafayette, Ill./Central Catholic), Alicia Ward (Mishawaka, Ind./Jimtown) and Alex Morales (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett).

The Peregrines trailed just once, as Roosevelt (5-15, 0-6 CCAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the second. But a Adams triple to left field scored Ward in the third and Adams would later steal home to put Purdue Calumet back in the lead at 2-1.

Roosevelt tied things up with a run in the fourth and both teams would score in the fifth -- the Peregrines on a Morales RBI-double -- to knot the game up at 3-all heading into the sixth. That's when Purdue Calumet would pull away with a big four-run frame, led by two, two-run singles up the middle by Ward and freshman Kaitlyn Skarecky (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central).

Senior Alison Kimble (Greenup, Ill./Cumberland) kept the Lakers' in check late, as she didn't give up a hit -- only one base runner reached, on an error -- in the final two innings. Kimble (7-6) finished with four strikeouts and scattered nine hits in the complete-game outing.

Wednesday's game was a makeup contest after Sunday's 10-inning, 44-run Game 1 contest between the two teams that saw the Peregrines set a new school record for runs scored in a 23-21 win over the Lakers.

Purdue Calumet returns to action Thursday when the Peregrines travel to league rival Purdue North Central for a league doubleheader in Westville, Ind. The first game is set for a 3 p.m. start.
