Purdue Men’s Basketball Earns Sixth-Consecutive NCAA Tournament Bid

purdue-logoThe Purdue men’s basketball team earned its sixth-straight NCAA Tournament berth on Sunday night, garnering a No. 10 seed in the Midwest Region from the selection committee. The Boilermakers will face Saint Mary’s on Friday in second-round action in Omaha, Neb.

Purdue has won its first game in the NCAA Tournament 13-straight times, having not lost its opening game in the Big Dance since 1993. The Boilermakers’ streak of six-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances is their longest making eight-straight trips from 1993-2000.

The Boilers will make their 26th NCAA Tournament appearance. The Boilermakers are 34-25 (.576) all-time in the tournament, with two Final Fours, three Elite Eights and eight Sweet 16s to their credit. Purdue has advanced to the Sweet 16 in two of the last three seasons.

Purdue has only been a No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament once, defeating Texas and Miami in Boston en route to a Sweet 16 appearance in 1999. The 58-54 win over Texas in the first round of the 1999 tournament is the Boilermakers’ lone matchup with a No. 7 seed.

Purdue and St. Mary’s have never met on the hardwood. The Boilers are 11-2 all-time against teams that currently comprise the West Coast Conference.
