Purdue University rose in the QS World University Rankings, released Monday (Sept. 5).
Purdue's overall ranking went to 85th, up from 87th in last year's survey. Purdue is the state's only public university ranked in the top 100.
QS considered more than 2,000 universities and evaluated over 700 in compiling the 2011 rankings.
"Rankings are one way that your impact around the world can be assessed," said Timothy D. Sands, Purdue's executive vice president for academic affairs and provost. "Being ranked in the top 100 of more than 700 universities tells prospective students that Purdue will prepare them to successfully compete and collaborate in a global economy."
Purdue was among six Big Ten institutions ranked in the top 100.
In the 2011 QS specialty rankings, Purdue's engineering and technology programs were ranked 31st, compared to 28th in 2010. In other specialty rankings, Purdue's natural sciences programs ranked 113th, compared to 118th in 2010; life sciences and medicine ranked 100th, compared to 86th last year; and social sciences and management were 139th, compared to 170th in 2010.

The rankings were based on reviews or data related to peer institutions, employers, students, research performance, and international faculty and students. More than 15,000 academics and employers from around the world responded to the surveys related to these rankings.
In August the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked Purdue 61st, up from 69th last year.
