Purdue Offers IT Training, Stipend to High School Students, Teachers and Counselors

PurdueLogoThe College of Technology at Purdue University is inviting high school students, teachers and counselors to two summer programs that teach how to use information technology and software tools in useful and interesting ways.

Students attending the Surprising Possibilities Imagined and Realized through Information Technology (SPIRIT) camp on July 16-20 will focus on the many ways computing skills can impact society. SPIRIT participants also will explore IT career options as they work on tasks.

"The SPIRIT project celebrates the impact of information technology and seeks to rekindle enthusiasm for the field as a career choice among high school students, especially young women," said SPIRIT project manager Alka Harriger.

Students who fulfill the program requirements will earn a $250 stipend. The camp does not include housing, but arrangements can be made with the program director.

Teachers and counselors attending the two-week program from July 9-20 will learn to use a tool in their classes and advising practices that has been shown to increase student interest in their subjects. The educators will learn how to better engage students and teach and advise them about IT opportunities. Teachers and counselors who fulfill the program requirements earn a $1,000 stipend, educational credit and free housing.

The registration deadline is June 1. To register and for more details, visit the SPIRIT website at http://www.itpossibilities.com
