Purdue programs in engineering, education and business were ranked among the best in the country in U.S.News & World Report's graduate school rankings released Tuesday (March 15).
"We are pleased that Purdue continues to be recognized for its strengths in education and research at the graduate level," said Purdue President France A. Córdova. "These rankings remind us that Purdue's faculty excel in their fields of study and that they continue to be praised for their roles as educators."
Mark J.T. Smith, dean of the Graduate School, added, "Purdue provides a tremendous education foundation and opportunities to work with world-class faculty members. Graduate students know this and that the strong interdisciplinary programs we offer allow them to address issues of global importance."
Not all disciplines are ranked each year. Other Purdue programs were ranked in previous surveys, and their placements carry over to this year's report.
Programs ranked this year include:
Engineering: Purdue's College of Engineering was ranked 11th in the country, tied with the University of Southern California. Last year, the college was ranked 13th, up from 15th in 2008.
Five of the schools in engineering were in the top 10 in the country in specialty rankings, including a No. 1 ranking for agricultural and biological engineering. Others in the top 10 are civil, in a four-way tie at third with Georgia Institute of Technology, Stanford University and the University of Texas-Austin; aeronautics and astronautics, sixth; mechanical, ninth; and industrial, 10th, tied with the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Other engineering rankings included electrical, tied for 11th with Princeton University; computer, 12th; chemical engineering, 15th; nuclear engineering, tied for 12th with the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; and materials engineering, tied for 16th with Harvard University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Education: Purdue's College of Education was ranked 43rd, tied with Florida State University and the University of Colorado. The program has climbed steadily from a ranking of 68th in 2008.
Business: Krannert School of Management was ranked 49th overall, tied with Michigan State University.
Krannert's Weekend MBA program was ranked 17th among part-time MBA programs, tied with Arizona State University, Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Maryland. In specialty rankings, Krannert's production/operations program was sixth, tied with Northwestern University, and its supply chain program was 11th, tied with the University of Michigan.

In the latest undergraduate rankings by U.S.News & World Report, released in August 2010, Purdue was ranked 18th overall among the nation's public universities, up from 22nd the previous year. Purdue tied for 12th nationally in a ranking of universities cited by college presidents, provosts and admissions deans as having an "unusual commitment to undergraduate teaching." The report also highlighted the university's efforts in first-year experience, internships, study abroad and writing in the disciplines.
U.S.News & World Report's complete rankings in "America's Best Graduate Schools" will be available on newsstands April 5. U.S.News has published graduate school rankings annually since 1987.
