Purdue TAP to Offer Green Manufacturing Specialist Exam Prep

PurdueLogoPurdue University's Technical Assistance Program will offer a workshop and exam for those interested in earning the Green Manufacturing Specialist certificate accredited by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

The workshop and exam will be offered April 2-4 both on Purdue's campus and online through live streaming video. Offering the workshop and exam online means that anyone anywhere can participate.

SME and TAP developed the Green Manufacturing Specialist certificate to help those in manufacturing add sustainability to their skills.

"Sustainable manufacturing provides a competitive advantage for companies and employees who embrace its core principles," said Jon Guenin, TAP's lead project specialist for sustainability. "Benefits to manufacturers include reduced energy, solid waste and water costs. Environmental reporting can be made simpler and permitting costs can be reduced. Sustainable practices also can result in increased or retained sales, new markets, and new customers who are interested in doing business with more socially conscious companies."

The Purdue TAP curriculum focuses on such topics as sustainable manufacturing, energy efficiency, water conservation, reuse and recycling, designing for the environment and how different pollutants affect the environment. It has been used by community colleges, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Manufacturing Extension Partnership centers, the Blue Green Alliance, trade unions and other organizations in 16 states.

During the first two days of the workshop, participants will review topics including sustainability and global conditions, material and solid waste management, energy management, chemical waste management and green chemistry, climate change and air emissions management, supply water and waste water management, and environmental business management.

The third day of the workshop, those taking it onsite will be given the exam. Those who take the workshop online will have a choice of exam dates.

Cost of the workshop is $700 and includes the exam and materials. Registration deadline is March 19 for onsite or online.
