RailCats blanked by RedHawks, 6-0, in fourth straight loss

FARGO, N.D. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats (34-53) dropped their fourth straight game in a 6-0 shutout loss to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (58-29) on a humid Monday night at Newman Outdoor Field. Following Monday’s defeat, Gary has lost five straight series and are a season-worst 24 games out of first place and 19 games below .500.

Fargo-Moorhead took the opening lead of the night with a pair of two-out runs in the first. Brennan Metzger tripled to the right-center field wall to begin the frame before Chris Jacobs drew a two-out walk. Correlle Prime then brought both into score with a two-run double off the top of the left-center field wall on the first pitch he saw.

The RedHawks doubled their lead with two more runs in the second. Brian Olson doubled down the right field line with one out before advancing to third on a single to left from Yhoxian Medina. Metzger followed with an RBI single, scoring Olson and moving Medina up to third. Tim Colwell then made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Medina from third.

Fargo-Moorhead went up by six with its final runs in the sixth. Prime homered with one out before Leo Pina doubled down the left field line. Carlos Garcia then hit a high fly ball to the left-center warning track, however, Michael Blatchford misplayed the ball, allowing Pina to score the game’s final run on the catching error.

Seth Hougesen (3-3) was charged with the loss in his third start against the RedHawks. The southpaw allowed six runs (five earned) over six innings on seven hits and a walk while striking out two.

Andrew Cartier re-signed with Gary before the game and retired all six batters he faced out of the bullpen. The right-hander induced two groundouts and struck out one.

Michael Tamburino (7-5) recorded the win in his third start against Gary with six shutout innings. Sebastian Kessay, Joe Filomeno and Brent Jones kept the shutout intact with a scoreless inning each out of the bullpen.

Gary concludes its three-game road series on Tuesday night at 7:02 p.m. vs. Fargo-Moorhead. RailCats’ right-hander Nile Ball (1-1, 5.65) opposes RedHawks’ southpaw Tyler Pike (8-2, 3.09) in the series finale.

Gary returns home to U.S. Steel Yard on Wednesday for a three-game home series vs. St. Paul. Wednesday’s series opener vs. the Saints is at 6:45 p.m. and is the last Creekside “Pop-Up Bar Wednesday”, celebrating Golden Girls, and NorthShore Health Centers Wednesday of the season.
