Rain, Hail or Tornados – Ginger Zee Is On The Scene

Ginger Zee, the meteorologist for NBC5, spoke at the Porter County Airport on weather conditions and developments in the science and technology of recognizing severe weather, as well as giving a brief history on her own development and interest in weather. One of her first experiences that piqued her interest was experiencing a tornado first hand. She eventually went into storm chasing and gained experience and education in meteorology, which lead her to NBC5, where she has received two regional Emmy awards for Best Weathercast in '07 and '08.

"Typically, I have the unique opportunity of waking up at 3:30 in the morning on Saturday morning to forecast," she said, "I don't know why, but people seem to think I'm reading something. I figure out the forecast, and build the graphics you see behind me, and then I talk about them."

Presenting graphs and images explaining the differences between certain weather conditions, Ginger informed the Porter County Pilots Association how to properly decipher information from local weather institutions.

She's not just a meteorologist, but also an innovator in the science of understanding severe weather like tornados. Her boyfriend designed a vehicle that can withstand 200mph winds and absorb debris with tank-like armor. With vehicles like this, they are able to collect never-before-attained information on the inside of a tornado.

"I get to put together the puzzle that is the atmosphere," she said with a smile.
