Rain or Shine, Rebuilding Together Continues Their Work

There's something about the rain this year that continues to speak volumes about the character of our citizens, as Rebuilding Together continued their annual "Work Day" this past weekend to spruce up the community. The weather is yet to be a deterrent for these dedicated, hardworking individuals, as they repaired the houses of eighteen different homeowners in need. In particular, a elderly woman living on Elmhurst experienced the kindness of her neighbors and family - some coming from St. Louis and Michigan to help rebuild and maintain their mother's home.

"My mom lives independent here," said Joni, her daughter, "and we just wanted to maintain her independence, so that she can stay in her home as long as possible. My mom was one of two people chosen as part of 'Heroes at Home'."
Her husband was a veteran of WWII, and he passed away in 2001, widowing her and leaving her independent in her home, however Joni would visit her mother often, living in town so that she can take care of her properly, when needed.

Her sisters Cindy and Anita honored their sister Joni, "She's like the caretaker, always over here running her to the doctor, mowing her lawn, taking her for appointments - doing everything. Kind of like the last man standing."
They continually expressed their gratitude to Rebuilding Together, saying, "We are eternally grateful. Thank you, to all the workers. To give up your weekend and come to work...to say thank you doesn't seem like enough. We're at a loss for words."

The volunteers were renovating a large part of the home, installing handrails, repairing a bathroom and replacing the stove so that she isn't forced to cook in her basement.

Since 1990, Rebuilding Together has already helped over 280 families in need, and they will continue their work with the help of the community.
