Registration Open for Middle School Computer Camp

PurdueLogo.jpegPurdue University's 2010 Adventures in Computer Science Summer Camp will be held on campus June 13-18.

The camp, sponsored by the Computer Science Department's K-12 Outreach Program, is open to students who will enter grades six through eight in the fall. No previous computer science or programming experience is necessary, but campers should be comfortable using a computer.

The camp will take an in-depth look at computer science concepts such as programming and robotics and how they are used to make a difference in our world. Using programs such as Python, Alice, Lego Robotics and JavaScript, campers will explore hands-on applications. They also will participate in a PicoCricket design studio challenge.

The camp will expose students to careers in computer science, increase their problem-solving skills and build awareness of the importance of math and science in preparing for a career in computer science.

Mindy Hart, computer science K-12 outreach coordinator, will lead the camp, along with computer science faculty and staff and K-12 teachers. Purdue students will work with campers as lab assistants and counselors.

Camp staff will provide 24-hour supervision, and campers will be housed in Hillenbrand Hall.

The $450 registration fee covers housing, meals, "fun nights" and all materials. Camp will conclude with a recognition luncheon and project show-and-tell that family members may attend for $10 each.

Space is limited, and campers who are registered before June 1 will receive a discount. Parents can register students at http://www.conf.purdue.edu/cscamp
