Russell Nelson Art Collection Unveiling September 30

Russell-Nelson-Art-Collection-UnveilingThe Russell Nelson Collection will be unveiled on Sunday, September 30 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Pines Village Retirement Communities in Valparaiso, Indiana. Russell Nelson, an artist and framer, was well known by local artists in the community of Northwest Indiana as a loyal friend and business partner.

As a student and friend of both artists, Hazel Hannell and Harriett Rex Smith, Russell pursued his passion for art after retiring from his position at Continental Can Company and opening his own frame shop, Art and Frames Inc. in Valparaiso. While in retirement, Russell balanced framing with vacations and art classes, growing immensely as an artist due to his dedication and willingness to learn.

He developed from a stiff, two-dimensional style into a three-dimensional, free flowing, expressionistic style as he aged,” says daughter Kim Nelson.

Russell Nelson’s artistic growth and active retired life support Pines Village Retirement Communities’ goal and promotion of positive aging. It is through this lens that the collection should be viewed and appreciated. Its display not only honors the life of Russell Nelson, but also serves as inspiration to others to explore their passions.

Pines Village Retirement Communities in conjunction with the Chesterton Art Center will host a public reception during the unveiling with food and refreshments. We encourage fellow artists and friends of Russell Nelson to come celebrate in his life.

This permanent gallery will be open to the public Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Pines Village Retirement Communities, Inc., in Valparaiso, Indiana, is a nonprofit organization that has been providing housing and services for older adults since 1983.
