Samardzija Throws 5 2/3 Shutout Innings in First Start of ‘10

Valpo’s Jeff Samardzija made his first Major League start of the 2010 season on Monday in the Cubs’ 5-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Samardizja, in his third start of his career threw 105 pitches over 5 2/3 innings, giving up no runs during the outing. He gave up six hits, and four walks while striking out one. "The Shark" was added to the major league roster after starter Carlos Silva went down with a shoulder injury earlier in the week.
