Jeff Samardzija struck out five batters in rout to his fifth win for the Iowa Cubs. The former Valpo star went seven strong innings in to the ball game, giving up three runs on eight hits.
Samardzija is now 5-3 on the year with a 3.72 ERA. He remains the most likely player to be called up to the major league squad to fill a starting rotation role. Samardzija had been called up earlier in the season to fill a reliever-role.
The reliever role did not suit Samardzija well, posting an 8.10 ERA in five games. He had spent most of the season before his call up in a starter role for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs.
