With flexibility, benefits, and fun activities, General Insurance Services (GIS) puts people first to create a positive work environment. Even though she has only been at GIS for five months, Receptionist Korrine Robinson has already seen these qualities in action.
“We definitely have a family-like culture here,” Robinson said. “I've only been here about five months now, and I already feel super connected to my team; I feel like they're my second family. We can always rely on each other, we motivate each other, and we’re definitely a mini family here at GIS.”
This family mindset means stepping-up and standing-in when co-workers need help, joining together for company picnics in summer, and celebrating employee birthdays.
“We celebrate every person's birthday in their offices, and we always coordinate someone to bring a cake or a dessert of their choice. We'll just get together and spend just a little bit of time celebrating whoever’s birthday it is. It’s something we look forward to – we love having cake over here,” Robinson laughed. “Before GIS, I never worked anywhere that really takes the time to make their employees feel welcome and feel like part of a team and something bigger.”
This positive workplace culture is one of the major factors that led GIS to be recognized as an employer of choice by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, and for the sixth year in a row, it was recognized as one of the best places to work in Indiana.
GIS’s mission is to secure the future of the communities it serves, and that starts with helping customers and extends to paid volunteer time. From educational organizations to youth non-profits, and from 4-H fairs to food banks, GIS staff members get paid to volunteer wherever they are passionate both separately and as a company.
“We definitely try to show our mission not only through our work but also through our community outreach,” Robinson said. “We partake in various sponsorships around the community and we try to volunteer as much as we can. Employees are able to go out and volunteer something they're passionate about and even use some paid time to do that. We all can definitely team up as well and do volunteer efforts within the community. If it's something that an employee is passionate about, it seems like the whole team wraps their arms around it.”
