Senior CARE Program in Valparaiso activated amid COVID-19 concerns

The Valparaiso Police Department maintains a CARE Program (Contact, Assistance, and Referral) year-round, with open registration for those groups who may be sensitive to extreme weather conditions, including senior citizens.

Given the current climate, and overall concern for these same groups during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have activated our CARE Program. We would encourage City of Valparaiso residents to register themselves or someone they know, who may need assistance during this time.

Registration can take place over the phone, by contacting the police department at 219-462-2135. Emergency contacts are required to be listed on the form for inclusion in the program, to ensure we can check on you or your loved one. Please have this information ready when you call for registration.

Once registered, current checks will be made on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week. The program will be continued under these guidelines until further notice. Officers will attempt to answer any questions on these calls and perform services when available to address needs.

The registration into this program will be maintained by the Valparaiso Police Department until a time it is no longer requested by the registered party or their emergency contact. Once the current situation is in a calmer state, the program will also return to normal practices utilizing the following guidelines for activation:

A. The heat index, a combination of air temperature and relative humidity, exceeds 100 de-grees Fahrenheit for two (2) consecutive days.
B. The air temperature falls below five (5) degrees Fahrenheit for two (2) consecutive days.
C. There is snow accumulation of six (6) inches or more within a 24-hour period.
D. Any other weather conditions that threaten the health or safety of identified individuals or groups

Thank you for your assistance and partnership as we work to keep our community safe.
