Shirley Heinze Land Trust Educational Hike: What Lies Beneath the Prairie?

Shirley_Heinze_Land_Trust_Educational_Hi-1What lies beneath the prairie? Join us for an educational hike on Saturday, September 13, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m at Cressmoor Prairie and Gordon & Faith Greiner Nature Preserves in Hobart, Indiana. Jonathan Bauer, PhD candidate at Indiana University Bloomington, will explain the importance of fungi and bacteria in prairie ecosystems.

Jonathan has been researching soil bacteria, fungi and other organisms in remnant and recreated prairies to understand their importance in prairie restoration. Jonathan will demonstrate for us some of the organisms found in the prairies, the type of roots they have, and how this relates to associated microorganisms. He will show us some of the plants in these two prairies (one remnant and one recreated) that have particularly interesting associations with fungi and bacteria. Fee: $25 per person. Advance registration is required for this event. You may register and pay online at www.heinzetrust.org.

Unless otherwise noted, group size is limited to 20. For additional information, contact (219) 242-8558 or jerdelac@heinzetrust.org.
