Smokey the Bear Visits Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Indiana-Dunes-Smokey-Bear-1Last weekend patrons of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore -- adults and children alike-- were excited to meet Smokey the Bear. After a grand entrance, arriving at the fire station on a National Park fire truck, Smokey visited with people taking photographs. Smokey has been the mascot of the United States Forest Service since 1944 and has been educating children about the dangers of fire and fire prevention. Greg and Marsha Villaroman of Hobart brought out their children Mychaela age 9, Spencer age 2, and Kyler age 8. The family, frequenters of the park, enjoyed interacting with Smokey and said these events are always fun for the family. Mr. Villaroman also said, “We love these events. They are so educational, too.”

In addition to meeting Smokey the Bear, featured speaker Costa Dillon, Superintendent of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, educated attendees on recent developments in the Park. He also fielded questions from the audience.
