SPEA Criminal Justice Week at IU Northwest Features Career Day, Mystery Game

Events scheduled for the week of Oct. 19 also include a spotlight program on the criminal-justice major.

The Indiana University Northwest School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) will host its annual Criminal Justice Week this month beginning Tuesday, Oct. 20. Events include a program that highlights the value of a criminal-justice degree, as well as the always-popular Career Day, when law-enforcement agencies and related organizations send representatives to campus to meet with students and prospective applicants.

Also, on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 11:30 a.m., SPEA will host a role-playing mystery event in which participants are asked to solve a crime, of which at least one member of the group is the perpetrator! This event will be held in Room 2001 of the Dunes Medical/Professional Center. It is open to the campus and the community, but only 60 people may participate. Contact SPEA Assistant to the Dean Sandra Hall Smith at 219) 980-6695, or email her at shsmith@iun.edu to reserve a spot.

Criminal Justice Week begins on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 11:30 a.m. in Dunes Medical/Professional 2001 with the program “Spotlight on Criminal Justice: What Can I Do With a Criminal-Justice Degree?” This event, hosted by SPEA Associate Professor Barbara Peat, Ph.D., will introduce prospective students to the benefits of the criminal-justice field and the challenges and expectations of the program at IU Northwest. This spotlight event, which will repeat at 2:30 p.m. in the same location, is perfect for students who are undecided about their majors or even for prospective traditional or non-traditional students who are thinking about earning a criminal-justice degree.

On Wednesday, Oct. 21, SPEA will host its annual Criminal Justice Career Day from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. in the Moraine Student Center. Numerous law-enforcement agencies and related organizations will send representatives to discuss with students and participating community members the career opportunities that may be available with them. SPEA representatives will also be on hand to discuss academic programs with prospective students.

All SPEA Criminal Justice Week events are free and open to students of all majors and to the Northwest Indiana community. For more information, contact Smith at (219) 980-6695, or email her at shsmith@iun.edu.
