Valparaiso University track & field junior Brian Sponaugle (Milton, De. / Cape Henlopen) was tabbed to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team on Thursday for his academic and athletic prowess.
Sponaugle, who owns a 3.85 cumulative grade point average in bioengineering, has cracked the program’s all-time top five in four different events. His indoor 1,000-meter time of 2:50.19 ranks fifth in program history, while his heptathlon total of 4,123 from this season ranks fourth all-time. His javelin personal best of 196-0 from this season ranks second in the program record book in the modern era, while he also accrued 6,148 decathlon points, third on the program’s all-time list.
Sponaugle placed sixth in the javelin at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships, earning three points for the Beacons.
To achieve MVC Scholar-Athlete Team status, student-athletes must possess a 3.5 or better cumulative grade point average, hold at least sophomore academic and athletic standing and place in the top eight in an individual event or the top three in a relay event at the indoor or outdoor championships.
