The YMCA and St. Mary Medical Center hosted tours and held a ribbon cutting to officially open the new wing of the building. Robert Wanek, CEO of the Y; Rex Richards, President of the Valpo Chamber, and Janice Ryba, CEO of St. Mary Medical Center, all helped to cut the bright green ribbon, celebrating the opening of the exciting new space.

“Our goal with the addition is to create a seamless spectrum of services we offer to Valparaiso and the surrounding communities,” said Janice Ryba, CEO of St. Mary Medical Center, “We recognize that each aspect of health and wellness must work in unison - that is why we’ve chosen to expand our partnership with the Valparaiso Family YMCA working together to treat the mind and body as a whole.

St. Mary Medical Center will provide the new rehabilitation services in addition to services already provided by the hospital's health and wellness nurse. Community residents and YMCA members already have access for routine health consultations, as well as health screenings, informational seminars, and a connection to local physicians.

“We are excited to offer a full spectrum of physical therapy services to the YMCA members and Valparaiso community,” said John Doherty, MS, PT, ATC, vice president of of therapy services for St. Mary Medical Center. “Our ability to now offer aquatic therapy in addition to more traditional treatments will be particularly beneficial to patients overcoming injuries and surgeries that necessitate decreased weight bearing. We look forward to a long partnership with the YMCA that will offer the highest quality of care and benefit to their membership, our patients and community”

Another key area to serve the community is the Personal Training Studio. YMCA NASM-certified personal trainers provide the very best in training to clients at all levels of fitness. Setting goals and executing trainings that deliver the desired fitness results focus on achieving long term health benefits. Personal trainers have the opportunity to utilize the new studio and coach clients in a designated space with state-of-the-art equipment.

The second floor of the addition will serve members of the YMCA classes that feed the soul. The number of mind and body classes at the Y will increase to 25. The new studios feature climate and lighting controlled space as well as Pilates equipment.

“Strengthening the community is why we are here,” said Chuck Gutzwiller, Sr. Director of Programs at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. “We can help get you started on the path to healthy living and keep you on track with consultation services, state-of-the-art equipment and programs. The entire staff is focused on your health and well being.”

Everyone involved knows about how important this addition will be to the community.

“This space is unique, and combined with physical therapy, is wonderful to have. We have cutting edge equipment and highly trained staff. We’re happy to share that with the Valpo Community,” said Robert Wanek, CEO for the YMCA.
