October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and people everywhere are looking for a way to show their support for survivors. At StoryPoint Chesterton, administrators showed their support by inviting residents to a special Pink Day event, reminding them of the senior living center’s commitment to supporting and enriching their lives and experiences.
Featuring a delicious spread whipped up by StoryPoint’s Executive Chef Brian Dougherty, residents were greeted the morning of October 23 with a special complimentary breakfast.
“We wanted to do something special for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so Thursday morning, we treated residents to a special pink breakfast,” said Shelly McCarthy, Life Enrichment Director at StoryPoint Chesterton. “We had pink strawberry pancakes, parfaits, pink fruit like grapefruit and strawberries, and more for residents to enjoy.”
Residents mingled as they enjoyed Chef Brian’s pink culinary creations and showed their true colors by wearing pink all day.
“We had an awesome turnout, so it was a great way to start the morning,” she said. “With residents unable to leave the center and the public unable to come in because of COVID-19, this was the perfect chance to gather and mingle together.”
Next up in the Pink Day schedule was Boobie Bingo, where residents enjoyed one of their favorite games and had the chance to win pink prizes.
“Of course, everything residents could win was pink,” McCarthy said. “We had delicious pink wine, beautiful pink flowers in a vase, pink throw blankets, books, and more fun prizes that residents could win.”
Closing out Pink Day was a Pink Drink Happy Hour featuring specialty pink cocktails. As residents sipped their pink drinks and chatted amongst friends, McCarthy remarked how important it was for StoryPoint to host events such as Pink Day for residents to gather together and enjoy each other’s company, especially in support of breast cancer survivors.
“We have a few residents who are breast cancer survivors, so our goal with the Pink Day was to set aside a day for them and to show them we are here to support them,” McCarthy said. “We want them to know that we care; that we understand their experiences and their stories, and we’re here for them and their wellbeing.”
