Students vs. Teachers Basketball Showdown

Students vs. faculty - the ultimate showdown of skill between the senior varsity girls and boys basketball team and the teachers that decided their GPA. Valparaiso High School hosted a special game benefiting Riley Children's Hospital, pitting the students against their teachers in the most ludicrous and hilarious game of basketball in the sport's history. The refs had a clear bias toward the faculty side, calling constant lane violations and fouls on the students, but all in good fun.

"It was a really lighthearted, fun event," Lauren Covington, the student council advisor said. She put the event together with biology teacher, Kelly Snoeyink, allowing the kids to choose which teachers they wanted to play.

"For student council, we do a Riley fundraiser every year," Kelly explained, "and one of our ex-sponsors - her son just got admitted to Riley, so it was extra important to us this year."

When asked how the even was planned, she responded, "We brainstormed what we thought we could do to get more of the school involved with the program, and we thought this would be fun for the staff and the kids."

And it was fun, with the announcer making constant cracks about the legitimacy of both the game and the referees. One of the "coaches" even tossed his clipboard into the court in frustration, claiming a bad call, and another student adorned in a green jacket and gray hair, mimicking coach Joe Otis.

They're hoping to make the benefit an annual event as part of their continued efforts toward charitable causes within the community.

With all the proceeds going to Riley Children's Hospital and having the students and faculty both involved in such a great cause, it's clear the years to come have a lot in store for the philanthropic future of VHS.
