Students Win Radio Broadcast Awards

The radio broadcasting work of four students at Valparaiso University’s student-operated radio station has been honored by the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters. Click "Read More" to hear some examples of WVUR's work.

Students working for WVUR 95.1 FM, named “Radio School of the Year” by the association in 2006 and 2008, competed against radio stations representing more than 20 colleges and universities in Indiana.

Individual awards won by WVUR in the competition were:

  • Radio Sportscast (First Place) – Adam Amin, a senior television-radio communication major from Addison, Ill.;
  • Radio Sportscast (Second Place) – Dave Schroeder, a senior television-radio communication major from Granger;
  • Radio Imaging (Second Place) – Harry Cassin, a junior international economics and cultural affairs and Chinese and Japanese studies major from Singapore, and Amin;
  • Radio News Report (Third Place) – Laurin-Whitney Gottbrath, junior television-radio communication major from Louisville.

Cameron Banga, WVUR general manager and a junior economics major from Hobart, said the awards are indicative of the radio station’s excellent quality and the value of the broadcasting experience students gain.

“I couldn't be happier that we were able to have four students take home such prestigious awards in the IASB competition,” Banga said. “The awards we’ve won this year show not only the great work that these individuals have done, but also speak to the quality of news, sports and DJ programming at WVUR when compared to larger campus radio stations across the state.”
