Tallian Appointed to Committee Studying Budget Recommendations

Karen-TallianSenator appointed to serve on six interim study committees, commissions

State Senator Karen Tallian (D-Portage) has been appointed to serve on the State Budget Committee this legislative interim. The committee is a bipartisan and bicameral body charged with hearing budget requests and making budget recommendations to the General Assembly. The Budget Committee's recommendations became the basis for lawmakers’ work in crafting the state’s two-year budget. The committee meets throughout the year and provides continuing legislative oversight of budget implementation, including major state-funded capital projects.

Another interim committee to which Sen. Tallian will serve this summer is the Unemployment Insurance Oversight Committee. The committee is charged with studying the use of debit cards to pay unemployment insurance benefits as well as the merit of allowing claimants to have their unemployment benefits direct deposited into a claimants personal checking or savings account. The committee will also study the feasibility of indexing unemployment benefits and the taxable wage base already in current statute.

Sen. Tallian has also been appointed to serve on the Child Custody and Support Advisory Committee, Indiana Heritage Trust Committee, Pension Management Oversight Commission and the Public Officers Compensation Advisory Commission.

These appointments were made by the Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne) upon recommendation of Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson).

The Indiana General Assembly annually convenes interim study committees and permanent commissions to conduct in-depth research and analysis of issues affecting the state. Recommendations from these committees are often the basis for future legislation. Sen. Tallian represents Senate District 4 which encompasses portions of northern Porter County and Michigan City, Coolspring and New Durham townships in LaPorte County.
