Terre Haute Named Indiana Chamber’s 2010 Community of the Year

IndianaChamber_clr.gifA focus on improving the local economy through business solutions and civic partnerships has helped Terre Haute enjoy a revitalization and earn the recognition as the Indiana Chamber of Commerce's 2010 Community of the Year.

Efforts to address Terre Haute's priority issues have been multi-faceted and include capitalizing on an all-time high level of private and public sector cooperation. Among the key efforts:

  • A downtown revitalization that has seen businesses relocate and buildings renovated. Newer attractions are two hotels, a weekly farmers market, plus the ongoing construction of a new $5 million Children's Science and Technology Museum
  • The Riverscape Project that will turn nearly 7,000 acres along the Wabash River into a dynamic destination for tourism and business
  • An expanding health care corridor that now includes a $185 million Union Hospital East and a new cancer center from Regional Hospital
  • The continued growth and community involvement of the area's four institutions of higher education: Indiana State University, Ivy Tech Community College, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College

"Terre Haute has been building toward this type of recognition and spotlight for several years," praises Indiana Chamber President Kevin Brinegar. "Thanks to a lot of hard work by various groups, the city has enhanced its economic future and elevated its quality of life for residents and visitors."

Terre Haute's Community of the Year award will be presented during the Indiana Chamber's 21st Annual Awards Dinner on November 9 at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. The 2010 Business Leader of the Year and Government Leader of the Year recipients will be announced at that time.

More than 1,200 business, political and community leaders are expected to attend. A generation's favorite news anchor, Tom Brokaw, will be the night's keynote speaker. Tables of 10 and individual tickets are available for the reception (5 p.m. EDT) and dinner (6:30 p.m. EDT). Reservations can be made at (800) 824-6885 or at www.indianachamber.com/specialevents.
