Terry and Karen McMahon donate $100,000 to IU Northwest Gift to benefit student-athletes with resource center dedicated to academics and athletics

iunorthwestGary, Ind. -- Indiana University Northwest is pleased to announce it has received a $100,000 gift from Terry and Karen McMahon. These funds will support more than 100 IU Northwest student-athletes with the establishment of the Terry and Karen McMahon Resource Center, a room dedicated to serve both academic and athletic needs.

Being able to create an environment where student-athletes can come together, as a team, was the main impetus for the gift, explained Terry McMahon, an avid sports enthusiast, who attended IU Northwest and graduated from IU Bloomington in 1962.

“I have been impressed by the quality of play of the IU Northwest sports teams and outstanding academic achievements of the players on the teams,” McMahon said.

The gift will allow the IU Northwest Office of Athletics an opportunity to renovate existing space so it can provide a greater benefit to the 10 RedHawk teams, which will include men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s tennis, beginning in the 2019-20 academic year.

The space will be conducive for academics and tutoring, as well as athletics with stadium style furniture, sport-specific sliding white boards, and technology infrastructure to support online and electronic materials, such as game film study.

The Resource Center will also be used by teams to host pre and post-game press conferences and new student-athlete signings, and as a location to host prospective student-athletes for recruitment visits and pre-game events.

“We are sincerely grateful for Terry and Karen’s long-standing commitment to and belief in IU Northwest, and specifically that of our student-athletes,” said Ryan Shelton, Director of Athletics. “Their transformative gift will have a lasting and meaningful impact for our student-athletes, student body, alumni, and our RedHawk fans and friends. All who walk through the doors of the Resource Room will take great pride in what it represents: dedication, commitment, excellence and tradition.”

Their gift counts toward the $3 billion For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign.

For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign is taking place on all IU-administered campuses, including IU Bloomington, IUPUI, IU East, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest, IU South Bend and IU Southeast. The campaign will conclude in June 2020 to coincide with IU’s bicentennial celebration.
